Global Youth Service Day
Opportunities for Kentucky’s Youth

As Keeper of the Five Promises, Kentucky Child Now is committed to creating opportunities for young people to serve. Top Ten Questions To Ask
Before You Begin

Before you begin, ask yourself the following questions to ensure a successful Youth Service Day for each project and project site.

  1. Will young people be excited about the YSD project? Is there a built in fun or social component?
  2. Does the YSD project offer opportunities for youth leadership development, real learning, sharing and friendship?
  3. Has time been set aside for orientation, reflection and evaluation?
  4. Will the service be challenging, meaningful, valuable and necessary?
  5. Is there enough work for everyone to do? I the formula balanced (Volunteers/task hours = results)?
  6. Is it "do-able" - is the project within resources (time, people, money, and expertise) or your volunteers? Is any special training, orientation, paperwork, medical checks, fees or background checks needed?
  7. Will the YSD project conflict with any other groups or events? Any possible opposition?
  8. Is there a potential to build coalitions with new groups? Will YSD projects tap into diverse community populations?
  9. Does the YSD project have a clear entrance and exit strategy and an understanding of volunteer roles, responsibilities? What will the youth and adult volunteers experience? Is there a need for orientation before the project?
  10. Is the YSD project safe? Have the volunteers exercised "due care" in an attempt to foresee any potential dangers and the proper precautions have been taken? Have waivers been signed by everyone working on the YSD project? Has everyone involved in the project done an on-site visit (young people, advisors, and/or attorney)?
